Behind the Scenes at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Columbus Marathon and ½ Marathon.
I am lucky. I work at Nationwide Children’s – a place that inspires me – and humbles me – everyday.
This weekend that inspiration was supercharged as we partnered with the Columbus Marathon for our second year as the event’s title beneficiary.
Our Columbus marathon is one of the best (and largest) in the country – 18,000 runners and more than 100,000 fans line 26.3 miles of our city and suburban streets. The energy and passion of the athletes – each celebrating a personal triumph as they complete this race – will move you! I was unsure how our community would react after the Boston Marathon tragedy but there were even more people lining the streets than last year – and the energy was amazing!
Fueling that energy to were our 26 “patient champions” along each mile of the course. Many miles were sponsored with generous corporate support and hundreds of runners signed up as “Children’s Champions” to run and fundraise for the hospital.
Even in chilly early-morning temperatures these amazing patients and their families, joined by corporate sponsors and race fans were loud and proud! They were there to cheer the runners, inspire the crowds and remind everyone how their donations are making a difference. I am thrilled to announce than more than $1.2 million was raised through this year’s marathon – with more donations still coming in.
